The Coal Export Action began with a dream: that by uniting across communities and harnessing the power of nonviolent action, ordinary people could stop some of the world’s largest energy companies from making Montana into a coal extraction colony, and transforming the Northwest into a coal export zone.
In August, 2012, a large coalition of groups united under the Coal Export Action banner to organize the largest climate-related civil disobedience in Montana history, at the State Capitol in Helena. This action helped to shift the dialogue around coal exports, and highlight the plight of communities affected by the coal industry’s deadly pollution.
